Barbecued Tofu

This easy to make tofu can be made up and kept in the fridge. Assemble in a sandwich or put on a salad. It is a great low fat option to have on hand. By simply adding Massel’s Stock Cube Beef Style to your favourite barbecue sauce, you add a depth of flavour that kicks up the tofu to a whole new level. If you like it spicy, add some chilli/red pepper flakes to the sauce.

(Serves: 2)

  • 1 Massel Stock Cube Beef Style
  • 1 ½ cup of your favorite BBQ sauce
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
  • 1 block (400g/14oz) of extra firm tofu

Preheat oven to 220°C/425°F

Slice the block of tofu into 9 slices. Place them on a double layer of paper towels or a clean tea towel (non-fuzzy) and place another double layer over them. Press firmly with your hands to remove as much moisture as possible. Let them sit on the absorbent material while you assemble the sauce.

In a sauce pan, heat BBQ sauce, Massel Stock Cube Beef Style, and hot sauce. When the stock cube is dissolved, remove from heat.

Cover a cookie sheet with foil. Brush one side of each slice of tofu with a thin layer of sauce and place it on the pan sauce-side down.

Spread remaining sauce on the tops and sides of the tofu.

Bake for about 25-30 minutes, until tofu is firm and just beginning to brown at the corners.
